Alkaline Ionized Water or Miracle Water?
Many claims on the healing powers of miracle waters in France, Germany, Mexico, and various parts of the world have surfaced over the past century. Clinical test results have shown these waters to contain a very strong reducing agent known as active hydrogen. These are Hydroxyl Ions (OH−) and they are basically free electrons(antioxidants) ready to neutralize any free radical found anywhere in your body!
How Many Fruits Can We Eat A Day?
We are all aware that a diet of fruits and vegetables can provide many health benefits including lowering the risk of cancer, heart diseases, and many other modern-day diseases.
By taking foods that contain high levels of antioxidants, we can slow down and even prevent the onset of these diseases. Antioxidant foods include oranges, apples, green beans, spinach, pumpkins, tomatoes, and a whole range of fruits and vegetables. But how many oranges and apples can we eat in a day to consume the optimal amount of antioxidants?
The Concept of Oxidation and Reduction
Let’s understand the concept of oxidation and reduction.
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is the reaction of substances when they come in contact with oxygen. It is easier to understand this process by looking at oxidation as the loss of electrons during a reaction. A very good example would be a cut apple turning brown on the inner surface or a nail rusting due to oxidation.
The above shows the oxidation process that has occurred in the apple when exposed to oxygen from the surrounding air.
What is reduction?
Reduction is the opposite of oxidation, where an addition of at least one electron takes place during a reaction between substances. Substances that readily donate electrons are seen as good reducing agents. Examples of good reducers include magnesium, iron, zinc, and sodium.
Magnesium donates electrons to Chlorine in the above reaction, reducing the Chlorine.
Free Radicals and Antioxidants
Research from the National Cancer Institute stated in a fact sheet that “Antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals.”

The same active hydrogen is produced in ionized alkaline water by passing a strong electrical current through water – a process known as electrolysis. This breaks the water molecules apart, creating Hydroxyl Ions(OH−) and Hydrogen Gas(H). However, since active hydrogen and molecular hydrogen evaporate quickly, the water has to be consumed fresh from its source.
To measure the ORP(antioxidant levels) of various agents, an ORP probe is used. ORP stands for Oxidation Reduction Potential and is measured in millivolts. A high negative reading suggests a high reduction potential and a high positive reading suggests a high oxidation potential. Ionized Alkaline Water has antioxidant properties and produces a high negative ORP reading when measured by a ORP reading device.
Micro-clustering of Water Molecules in Ionized Alkaline Water
Non-ionized water cluster together in groups of 10 to 20 molecules. Ionized water are smaller micro-clusters of water molecules made up of 4 to 6 molecules and are hexagonal in shape. This means that the water is able to permeate cell membranes quicker and more efficiently. This increased permeability means that it can move water soluble toxins in and out of the cells quicker than your body does normally. It also allows you to move nutrients and minerals into the cells quicker. This is the main reason people report feeling less fatigue when drinking alkaline water.
